Albania is one of my favorite countries I have ever visited. It surprises me how few people have it on their radar because it has everything for any type of traveller. (Read here all about why I love Albania). If you don’t have time for a long trip, you can still enjoy Albania with day trips from the capital city of Tirana. 

The capital sits within easy reach of ancient ruins, Ottoman old towns, turquoise lakes, and dramatic mountain scenery, with most destinations landing within a two hour drive. Whether you are after history, hiking, beaches, or simply a beautiful place to wander, there is a day trip from Tirana that delivers.

This guide covers the best day trips from Tirana, with everything you need to know about getting there, what to do, and whether an overnight stay is worth considering.

Tirana is Albania’s capital and home to the country’s main international airport. So chances are, it’s where your Albanian adventure begins. The city itself is quite interesting and worth exploring. One of the main perks is that accommodation is quite affordable which is great for longer stays.

What really makes Tirana the best city for day trips is the transport connections. There is a large central bus station that serves almost any city in Albania, with departures running throughout the day. That means far more flexibility for day trips from Tirana than you would get from a smaller town.

Additionally, tour buses typically depart from the Tirana city centre, so if you prefer an organised trip, you will have plenty of options to choose from.

Where you stay in Tirana depends largely on how you plan to get around. Travelling mostly by public bus? Stay near the bus station in the northwest of the city. It will save you time and hassle on early mornings, because the main bus station is north of the city centre. (Read all about my tips for taking public transportation here).

If you’re planning to join guided bus tours, most pick up from the city centre, so that area works well.

If you wanting to stay near the bus station to keep things simple, there are some solid options within a 5-10 minute walk of the Tirana bus station:

If you would rather be closer to the centre of town, staying central puts you within easy reach of Skanderbeg Square, the Blloku district, and more restaurant options:

Most of these day trips are accessible via car or public bus. If you have read my blog post about renting a car vs using the bus in Albania, you’ll know that I am partial to using the bus as renting a car was more stress than it was worth. (You can read the full blog post here). 

Most day trips from Tirana are doable by either car or public bus. I have written a full post on this already, but in short I personally would take the bus every time. Renting a car in Albania turned out to be more stressful than it was worth.

Albania is great to visit almost any time of the year, but what you do depends on the season and region.

Summer

Coastal temperatures average 28–34°C (82–93°F), inland 30–36°C (86–97°F), and 20–25°C (68–77°F) in the mountains.

It is peak tourist season and popular beaches in Ksamil and Sarandë will be packed. Smaller towns, however, will not usually be crowded. It is the hottest part of the year and August can be extremely hot (up to 40°C or 105°F). Great for beaches and hiking in the northern Albanian Alps.

Spring/Autumn

Coastal temperatures 20–28°C (68–82°F), inland 15–24°C (59–75°F), mountains 10–18°C (50–64°F).

Warm, fewer crowds, occasional rain, lower prices, and ideal mountain weather for hiking.

Winter

Coastal 12–15°C (54–59°F), inland 8–12°C (46–54°F), mountains 0–5°C (32–41°F).

Mild along the coast but snowy in the mountains, with possible road closures in the Albanian Alps. Days are shorter, and some tourist locations may have reduced hours or be closed entirely.

Distance from Tirana: About 32 km (20 miles) north of Tirana, roughly 45 minutes by car or 1 hour by bus.

Krujë is a mountain town north of Tirana that most people skip, but I highly recommend visiting. The old town climbs a hillside, with a stunning Ottoman bazaar winding up toward the main gates.

The bazaar is one of the best preserved Ottoman bazaars in the Balkans, and an ideal spot to pick up handwoven rugs, wooden crafts, and antiques. I would budget a few hours here because the browsing alone can fill an entire morning.

After the bazaar, grab a bite to eat from one of the many restaurants then head up the hill to Krujë Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum.

The ethnographic museum is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary too. Housed in a beautifully preserved Ottoman-era home, it showcases traditional Albanian interiors, clothing, and customs in a way that feels genuinely immersive.

Before heading back to Tirana, walk up to the watchtower for sweeping views over the Ishëm Valley.

Distance from Tirana: About 25 km (15 miles) northeast of Tirana, roughly 45 minutes by car.

Note that the road requires a 4×4 vehicle due to rough conditions, and there are no public bus routes. An organised tour is the easiest way to get here.

If you are after a day trip built entirely around the outdoors, Bovilla Lake is perfect for you. The road to the lake winds through the mountains and the drive alone is beautiful scenery. At the end of it, a vivid turquoise reservoir opens up, surrounded by picturesque mountains.

The main hike leads up to the Gamti Mountain viewpoint, where you will have panoramic views of the lake. If you have time, there are several other trails in the area to explore.

One thing to keep in mind, swimming and fishing are strictly prohibited in the lake. 

Distance from Tirana: About 122 km (76 miles) south of Tirana, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by car or 2 hours by bus.

Berat ended up being my favourite city in Albania, and if you can swing an overnight stay, do it. That said, it works well as a day trip from Tirana too, because it is only about 1.5 hours away. Known as the City of a Thousand Windows, Berat earns that name from the rows of Ottoman style houses stacked up the hillside, creating a grid of identical windows.

What makes Berat so special is how distinct each section of the city feels. Berat Castle is set on top of the hill is the ruins of a Byzantine era citadel. In Berat Castle you can wander the old neighbourhoods, walk on sections of the castle walls, visit multiple churches and mosque ruins, the Iconographic Museum, and stop at one of the restaurants for the views.

Below the castle sits Mangalem Quarter, the Ottoman era neighbourhood built into the hillside. Wind through cobblestone streets, sip wine from a wine window, and soak up the atmosphere at a local cafe or mosque.

For the best views of the castle and those famous thousand windows, cross the river to Gorica Quarter. This area has strong Christian architectural influences.

Visit one of the many churches and find a restaurant terrace with a view. (I recommend this resturant that does a fabulous 3 course menu and has incredible views). If you plan on staying the night, I recommend staying in the Gorica Quarter. 

Distance from Tirana: About 38 km (24 miles) west of Tirana, roughly 35 to 45 minutes by car or 45 minutes by bus.

Durrës is one of the quickest and easiest day trips from Tirana. Most visitors make the trip for the beautiful sandy beaches. You can enjoy your day soaking up the sun and swimming in the blue waters of the Adriatic sea. 

Beyond the beaches, there are several historically significant sites in Durres. This city has been fought over, built up, and rebuilt for thousands of years, and the evidence is everywhere.

There is a Roman amphitheatre right in the city centre and ranks among the largest in the Balkans. The archaeology museum has artifacts from Illyrian times through Greek and Roman eras. There is also a Venetian Tower and Byzantine city walls that you can explore.

Distance from Tirana: About 116 km (72 miles) north of Tirana, roughly 1.5 hours by car or 2 hours by bus.

Most travellers treat Shkodër as a jumping off point for Theth, but this city is interesting on its own. Rozafa Castle perches on a dramatic hilltop above the city, offering panoramic views in every direction. 

Another iconic location is Lake Shkodër, which is the largest lake in the Balkans and even shares its shores with Montenegro. The lake is popular for swimming and boat rides, but a lakeside walk or bike ride might fit a day trip schedule a bit better. 

Wander the old town’s colourful streets, stop at a cafe, and visit the Marubi National Museum of Photography or the Historical Museum, both well worth your time

Distance from Tirana:  About 87 km (54 miles) southwest of Tirana, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car. By bus, head to Fier, which takes around 2 hours, then grab a taxi for the 20-minute ride to the site.

Apollonia does not get the attention it deserves, and that is exactly what makes it worth visiting. This ancient Greek city sits outside the town of Fier, and it ranks among the most significant archaeological sites in the entire region.

Wander through the ruins of temples, a town hall, an odeon, and enjoy several mosaic floors that have survived remarkably well. There is a museum, housed inside a beautifully restored Byzantine era church, that adds additional context to the site. It houses a collection of sculptures, ceramics, and artefacts from the area. If you like archeology, it is well worth the visit

Distance from Tirana: About 160 km (99 miles) north of Tirana, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by car to the village of Koman, where you board a ferry across Koman Lake toward the Shala River. There are no public bus routes, so an organised day trip from Tirana is the most practical option.

This is the furthest destination on this list and the one that demands the most of your day. That said, it is worth the trip. This day trip is all about the journey, rather than the destination. From Tirana you will drive to Koman, once there you will get on a boat that will take you through the winding canyons of Komani Lake. 

The boat journey takes 2 hours, but along the way you will enjoy towering limestone cliffs dropping staring into turquoise waters. The whole scene feels more like Norway than the Balkans. The boat drops you at the Shala River, where you can swim in the cool pools, eat at the riverside restaurant, or hike the cliff for views before heading back to Tirana.

You can organise the journey on your own or book one of the several organised tours that handle all the logistics for you.

You will often find both Theth and Gjirokastër on other day trip lists, and yes, visiting either in a single day from Tirana is technically possible. But I would not recommend it. Both destinations are around 3.5 to 4 hours from Tirana each way.

Factor in travel time and you barely scratch the surface of either place before turning around. In my opinion, both cities are worth a longer visit. I would recommend either staying overnight or use a closer city as your base instead of Tirana.

Even if you have a few days in Albania you can see a lot of the country via day trips. Whether you are wandering the cobblestone streets of Berat, cruising through the dramatic canyon of Komani Lake, or exploring the ruins of a forgotten ancient Greek city, each destination offers something completely different. Most are easy to reach by public bus, and with Tirana’s central bus station connecting you to almost every corner of the country, the hardest part is simply choosing where to go first!
